Dim Sum Diaries

Staying Up Too Late Is Not Good IMO

It was 12:40 am. I lay on my side of the bed, book in hand, riveted...completely engrossed in the story...so much so that I stayed up until 3 am last night finishing up the book. Ronlyn Domingue writes with a graceful, flowing hand. The climax of the book sucker punched me and after I read the last page I was almost in tears. So if there is anything you do this summer, you have to read The Mercy of Thin Air.

Kyren! Go read it already! :)

So this morning I woke up, tottering around trying to get the kids ready for their summer day camp. I checked my cell phone for messages and noticed that Dad had sent me a pic text message. The Rents were supposed to be camping in Yoesimite with Aunt G & Uncle Deep Throat.

But what I saw had me frantically trying to call my parents...it was rather grainy side view picture snapped of my mom, with large pink spots covering her cheek. Had she fallen off a cliff? Walked into a large patch of poison ivy? Been attacked by a band of roving wild bears? The background didn't look familiar to me, so I knew they weren't home. Who gave a shit if it was 7:30 am...someone had to tell me what the hell happened. I dialed their cell phone and luckily Mom answered.

"MOM!! Are you okay??? What happened to your face???"

"Oh," she replied. "I got bitten by a bunch of mosquitoes."

"I thought something horrible happened to you!"

"Blame your father, he took that picture of me and wanted to shock the family by texting that pic to EVERYONE."

I could hear my father's guilty tee hee in the background.

We talked a bit more and hung up. Now I suppose I know where I got my dramatic sense of humor from...*le sigh...
I bring you Monty Python's Knights of the Round Table Camelot spiel:

Then...same song set to Star Trek (hilarious):

Just belatedly realized that I've had this blog for about three years! Thats a big wow.

So many thoughts running through my head...I shall resolve to write more faithfully...

But for now...I can make this post really really bloggity:

WHAT I'M LISTENING TO:

Kick ass rockingist Canadian Irish music!

WHAT I'M READING:

The Mercy of Thin Air (or will be tomorrow). Based upon a favorite author's recommendation, it sounds pretty intriguing and I'm stealing what she wrote straight from her post cuz I'm a lazy ass:

The basic set-up is this : a beautiful young woman named Raziela, is deeply in love with Andrew in the 1920s, and she dies tragically before they get married. As another character in the book says, the rest of Andrew’s life revolves around the moment he loses Raziela, who drowned in the swimming pool.

For the next seventy years, Raziela exists in the world “between,” gently haunting the friends and loved ones who knew her. She tries to find out what became of Andrew, who seems to have disappeared. At the same time, Raziela meddles to reunite a pair of modern-day lovers, Amy and Scott, who turn out to have a surprising connection to her own past.

It is the relationship between Raziela and Andrew, however, that drives this story like a arrow into your heart. Razi is a strong, independent woman ahead of her time, and Andrew is the only man capable of understanding her. Their moments together are exquisite. And painful, because they capture the exquisite fragility of human life, and the terrible longing we feel for a loved one who is gone forever.

One love scene, in particular, nearly caused me to drop the book. I’ve never read anything like it--and I marveled at the skill and emotional honesty of an author who could elicit such a visceral reaction from me. I thought I had seen it all--but I hadn’t, and I was shocked and moved by Ronlyn Domingue’s vision.

It took four years for Domingue to write “The Mercy Of Thin Air,” and I can see why. It’s a work of art, and more importantly, a work of love.
Well its officially the middle of summer! Man has time flown by so very fast, but then again I always say that don't I? This summer has been very warm (*fans self) for me...me in Cali here suffering at 82 degrees F, with the air conditioning at full blast from 8 am to god knows when. Again with the changes in life...Son will now be entering Kindergarten this fall (next month omfg). He is soooo ready, no more of that baby preschool crap for him. Daughter will be in 3rd grade...so no more tuition for preschool...thats a good thing. Son is old enough to enter the world of summer camps, which he is thoroughly enjoying, and Daughter is excited at the prospect of a week of horse camp (wonder what happens when she finds out she has to shovel the horse shit). So its a bit of snoozy time for me. The kids get some outside exposure, its a win win situation for all sides, imo.

Maybe I should talk a bit about my younger sister here as well. She turned 31 this year and has a fabu job as a manager. Everyone has been bugging her to have kids, but she's seemed to ignore the pleas....until now. I left el kiddos for a couple of days at her house and she babysat (not my mom...actually her o_O). When I picked them up, she called later that evening (and she NEVER calls me, except to tersely relay information about family matters, then hangs up). Color me shocked!

N: Hey!

Me: You...called...

N: Yes I did.

Me: OMFG.

N: What?

Me (enjoying this now): Are monkeys flying out of my butt? You called?

N: Nothing! I was just wondering if you made it home ok and I was missing the kids! Do they miss me?

Me: Of course they do.

N: No really really miss me? Did they cry?

Me (rolling eyes): Yes. Buckets.

N: No really. Were they crying at the mere thought of not being able to spend anymore fabulous time with their wonderful Aunt N.?

This goes on for some time...I think she is starting to maybe think about kids...although if she read this, she'd probably kill me.

And another weird thing happened today, I find myself lapsing into Chinese phrases at the oddest times. I was lounging on son's bed today while he was getting putting his shirt on (was about to meet Hubby and Daughter at fabu Thai place for dinner). He finished putting on his shirt and he climbed on the bed. Apparently some light went on in his head and he pointed at my boobs and said, "Mommy, what are those bumps???"

Then he reached out to grab it...and I was like WHOA WHOA WHOA!!! I kinda freaked out and firmly took his hand. "No no no. Those are Mommy's. No touchy."

"What are they?"

I hesitated. What the hell do you tell your son about your breasts. "You know your...nai nai gee?" (Cantonese baby phrase for boobies).

I pointed to his chest. He nodded.

"Those are Mommy's parts...you don't touch ok? And nobody touches your boy parts? You know your boy bits? You know what I mean right?"

He nodded again...

Its always a little uncomfortable talking about the birds and bees to one's children. How in the hell am I going to explain masturbation?? I should probably call my Mom or Dad and ask them how to say it in Chinese because for some reason it sounds so less forbidding in another language... o_O
